Peirce Family Reading Night--Hawaiian Luau

The Peirce Family Reading Night event was spectacular!  We had many parents, students and teachers in attendance!  Everyone received a Hawaiian Lei upon entering our school and students were able to participate in many literacy activities that were tied to our Hawaiian theme.  Thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers and book donors, students were able to choose free books and movie videos to take home.

We would like to thank Ms. Hopkins and Ms. Jump for organizing the event and would like to thank Ms. Puente and Mrs. Lawrenz for putting together the upper grades Poetry Slam.  We have true poets in the making :-)

A distinctive thank you goes out to the North Shore Kiwanis Club and Women and Children First who partnered in supporting literacy development for all of our students at Peirce.

Panther Pride: A Pledge Drive to Benefit the Technology Fund at Helen C. Peirce Elementary

Dear Peirce Families and Friends,

We have exciting news to share!  Friends of Peirce is launching a pledge drive to support the Technology Fund at Perice.  The school's goal is to secure state-of-the-art technology that will benefit students in all grades.

We are in the middle of an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise money for five areas identified in the School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement (SIPAAA).  One of the primary goals of SIPAAA is to raise $62,000 for technology enhancements.  Friends of Peirce was able to donate $20,000 toward that goal using proceeds from a community event we held in September 2010.

Now we turn to parents, relatives and friends of students.  We are asking parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to make a gift to Friends of Peirce to support the Technology Fund.  Our goal is to raise $10,000 by October 31, 2011.  Make a donation in an amount that is most comfortable for you and your family.  No amount is too small!  you can pledge today and pay later.  You can pay all at once or give a little every month.  Just imagine:  if we were to receive just $10 for each student enrolled at Peirce, we would nearly reach our goal.

Your gift will be used to help ensure our students have the necessary tools for improving their proficiency and competence in computer literacy.  It will be used to give teachers the tools they need in a modern classroom.  We want Perice to be an the cutting edge of technological innovations.  You can help to make that happen!

Sincerely,
Kim Biggs and Cara Rudolph
Pledge Drive Co-Chairs, Friends of Peirce

Checks are preferred.  Please mail donations to the school:  1423 West Bryn Mawr, Chicago, IL 60660 or drop off at the school office.

Meet a Fierce Peirce Parent and Community Leader: Chris Inserra

Adios amigos
Good-bye my friend
Hasta la vista
Until we meet again
When you know somebody’s name
You become a friend
No longer strangers
You can smile again
Adios amigos
Good-bye my friend
Hasta la vista
Until we meet again
song and lyrics by Chris Inserra

Chances are, if you’re a parent of a preschooler or kindergartenter at Peirce, you’ve heard your child sing this song either in the classroom or at home.  Chris introduced this song 14 years ago when her oldest son, Nathan, started preschool with Ms. Pierce; Nathan, then had kindergarten with Ms. Mendez, our current principal.  Gabriel, her second son, followed three years later, also under the preschool guidance of Mrs. Pierce. Both Nathan and Gabriel graduated from Peirce. Her daughter, Debra, is currently in 6th grade as part of the new middle years program.
A church choir director, community activist, and singer with the well known Chicago social justice group “Voices”, Chris has devoted many years at Peirce in the music program, the MPTSO,  and PUENTE.  She is currently serving as Chair for the LSC.
Meet Chris and other proud, fierce Peirce parents at one of the next Peirce Parent Group Meetings.  Whether your children are in pre-school or eighth grade, new members are always welcomed.  Come and connect with families across the grades and learn how you can make a difference at your child’s school. Hasta la vista!

Theatre at Peirce

RAVEN THEATRE UPDATE: Nearly 100 Peirce and Raven supporters gathered Sunday, March 27th to enjoy Raven Theatre's rendition of August Wilson's Radio Golf.  Before the show, attendees were treated to fabulous food and drink from local businesses.  Metropolis Coffee (yay! Peirce parents) served up some killer Joe.  Taste of Heaven gave many delights including lemon bars, chocolate chip cookies, and pecan bars.  Swedish Bakery  offered assorted traditional cookies.  Anteprima provided savory tarts. Anna Held Florist and Soda Fountain Cafe (another Peirce parent!) contributed delicious brownies and beautiful spring floral displays. Jewel Foods contributed toward punch and paper supplies.  A little champagne was also enjoyed.
Nearly $2500 was raised to benefit Raven Theatre, which helps ensure continued Drama education through Raven for all Peirce 4th graders.  Thanks to All faculty, staff,  parents, and community members for making the event a big success!

Room 123 has been learning about all the activity that goes on at a farm. They have been studying different animals and the foods that they provide and their work on the farm. We have been sorting seeds that grow a variety of foods and we will be planting them soon too.  The children have been pretending to be farmers as they build farms out of blocks and make tractors to plow the fields.

Next week we will visit the farm at Lincoln Park Zoo as our culminating activity. After that we will see what new interests arise as we head into spring. Our crops will grow as are our children!

Miss Hopkins (Preschool) Room 121
March 25, 2011
We have busy learners throughout the month of March. With the Kohls Children's Storybus that came at the end of February, we were engaged and creative in our Three Little Pigs unit! Our class went through a three step building series of making their own house. Students drafted the type of house they liked, what materials they would use, along with how many windows, doors, etc. Then they went into creating on a large piece of construction paper their two dimensional model of their house, and lastly they used milk cartons as the base of their 4D model. The kids learned a lot from this project, and had a lot of fun as well! As an ending project, we created a "preschool life-size" house! The children voted on which house to build from the Three Pigs. They chose the brick house. Using a large box saved from last year, the children painted, colored, pasted, and constructed their house of bricks! (Including the chimney for the wolf to come down!) This brick house was greatly enjoyed throughout the month of March, but has retired to the land of fairy tale houses!

A wonderful event that has been going on throughout the month of March is that there has been a little Leprechaun visiting some of the kindergarten rooms and room 121! His name is Leroy the Leprechaun, and he has been playing tricks and leaving clues for the children for the past six years! On March 17th, Leroy the Leprechaun sent the preschoolers of room 121 on a huge treasure hunt for the Pot of Gold! The children were squealing with delight, and were amazing problem solvers, communicators, and partners in helping to read the clues, and following the map to the treasure! It definitely was an awesome way to end the week in Preschool!

Currently in room 121 we are underway with our amazing ZOO unit! All of preschool classrooms will be going to the Lincoln Park Zoo on Wednesday, March 30th to see the animals we've been studying, exploring, and creating within our art area! The preschoolers in room 121 decided to focus their animal study on two different types of animals. Our morning class is studying Giraffes and our afternoon class is studying Gorillas! We have been busy bees in our classroom these past two weeks!

A favorite math project we conducted this past week was measuring the height of how tall these animals can be. Using yellow yarn, a yardstick, and some adult supervision, the children laid out the string of the height of a giraffe! The children found through their research that giraffe's can get up to be 19 feet tall! We wanted to see how tall that would be in preschoolers! So, the children lay down next to the yarn, and we found that it takes 5 1/2 preschoolers to equal the height of a giraffe, and 44 preschooler footprints to equal the height of a giraffe! The data collecting was awesome for the children to experience! They were amazing mathematicians, scientists, communicators, and team players! Awesome job preschoolers in room 121! You kids rock!

Mr. Wanberg (Kindergarten) Room 128

March 17, 2011
Yesterday, the day before Saint Patrick’s Day, we read a story about a leprechaun.   Some kids decided it might be fun to write to one.  I had some extra paper, so we put together some letters and decorated some cups with things that leprechauns like.  Gold mostly, but some kids had different ideas too.
One girl decided that a leprechaun might be named Jack Goldstein, so she wrote her letter to him.
Well, imagine our surprise when we arrived this morning to find green footprints leading from the closet to the tables.  And our notes were gone, and the cups had shrunk, and each cup contained leprechaun gold.

Some of them decided that he got in the room from under the sink, and they spent a lot of center-time on their backs under the sink looking up at the plumbing and saying things like, “There’s shiny stuff under here!”

The very best part (for me) was after lunch, when we were about to read a story, I overheard them still talking about how the leprechaun managed to do what he did.  One child said that well, he did have all night, and another one immediately responded, “No, no.  Leprechauns aren’t nocturnal."

Cross my heart.

They might have said more but I got up as fast as I could to write that one down.

We finished our unit on frogs this week. Students were very excited to learn that not all frogs are green and some are even poisonous. Stop by and see our frog puppets. We also made books about the life cycle of a frog.

We are working on our new bulletin board so we cut out and painted umbrellas and boots using watercolors. The flowers will appear this week.

I have also included some pictures from Family Reading Night. It was a huge success! I was happy to see so many families in attendance.

In language arts, our unit theme is animals. Phonics: short vowel /u/ and /q/. We will also continue word building activities. Reading comprehension skills will focus on details and main idea. Will continue to use graphic organizers to show comprehension strategies. Our high frequency words are: and, there, give, little, that and have. We will continue with our daily journal practice and also writing letters.

Peirce Walk A Thon Update

Peirce students and families have walked big like a dinosaur and pounced like a panther, as our Walk-A- Thon efforts have kicked off.

Remember, Peirce Walk-A-Thon is more than a fun day with classmates.  The pledges that are collected are returned to Peirce to help fund our sports program.  With approximately 55% of our middle school students participating in a Fall sport, we have many student-athletes to cheer for!  Be a part of something BIG.

Continue to collect pledges up until April 14th, Walk-A-Thon Day.  Additional pledge forms are available in the school lobby.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the Walk-A-Thon on Wed. April 14th.
We need 10 parents to cover each of the two sessions - 9am-11:30am and 12:30pm-2:30pm.
Can you be a part of something BIG?  Can you cheer our students on?  Join other parents for a fun day with our kids.  Please contact Kate Merrill (kateanddavemerrill@sbcglobal.net) or Peirceparentsgroups@gmail.com to volunteer.  Thank you!

Going GREEN for Peirce! Environmental rebate and fundraising program

Dear Friends,
Introducing two exciting programs that will save you money, raise funds for our school, and help the environment!
The first program is FREE and will save you money on your electric and water bills.  The second program is heavily discounted and will pay for itself by reducing your heating and cooling bills.
As long as you are a customer of Peoples Gas, you can participate in either or both!  Here is a quick review of each program:
#1 - Direct Install Program
Peoples Gas and ComEd will help you save money by installing energy saving products – FREE OF CHARGE. You call, and they will install energy-saving Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL’s) and water-saving faucet aerators and showerheads.  You can also encourage your neighbors to sign up!  For every household that signs up for this free program and notes that our school referred them, we earn a $3.50 rebate.
Call 877-803-3674 to schedule your free installation. You must call by the middle of April to earn the school rebate. In most cases, the installation will happen within 1-2 weeks of your call.  When scheduling your appointment, please make sure the scheduler logs our school’s name.

#2 - Attic Insulation Program
The Attic Insulation Program offers you and your neighbors a 75% rebate on an installation, or up to $850. So, for example, if your attic costs $800 to insulate, it’ll cost you only $200 after the rebate.   Over time, you’ll make that money back (and more) through lower cooling and heating bills.  AND our school earns a $20 rebate for each attic insulated!
For the Attic Insulation Program, you can do the insulation yourself or hire a professional.  The installation must be completed by May 31After it is installed, apply for your personal rebate online here: http://www.conservationrebates.com/programs/chi/CHI_App.aspxThen, after you submit your personal rebate, fill out a short form here to ensure that our school gets its $20 rebate: www.chicagolandrebates.com/participantregistration.
Again, you can participate in one or both programs. Spread the word – get your neighbors, family and friends to sign up for either program and help our school earn as large a rebate as possible
If you have any questions, please contact Tom Fendley, Edgewater Green Schools Committee, TerraLocke, Inc. at 773-633-4128.
